The Pastor of the Church at Laodicea

Why is this the eighth scroll of Revelation? The Lord ordered the Apostle John to write to the angel of the church at Laodicea
(Revelation 3:14). John was an obedient Overcomer to God in writing this scroll in regards to God's command to him. No one knows who the angel or the pastor of the church was at the time of the writing of this letter from John. It might have been Archippus
(Colossians 4:17) as he was the first overseer of Laodicea and assumed to be the son of Philemon...(Philemon 1:2). The church started in his house and grew from there.

The Ancient City of Laodicea

Let us take a brief look at the secular history and city of Laodicea
to the end of the first century A.D.
:
The city of Laodicea in Asia Minor was one of the seven cities of Revelation. The city was named after Laodice, the wife of Antiochus the Second, King of Syria, who influenced it to be rebuilt and beautified. Its name meant "justice of the people".

The city was located in the great valley of the Lycus near the Lycus River that flowed into the Maeander River. The city was about half way between Philadelphia and Colossae, not too far away from Hierapolis and about twenty five kilometers (forty miles) from Ephesus. It was an inland city that had no sea port. It was built at the intersection of three important roads being the gateway to southwest Phrygia. Camel caravans came from the oriental east to Laodicea. From the crossroads at Laodicea they could continue their journey to other cities such as Ephesus, Miletus, Smyrna, and others. There were a number of cities that had the same name but this was the richest one of all.

The city was originally built by the Greeks. Alexander the Great had four generals that carved up his empire into four parts after his death. General Seleucus took Syria while General Lysimachus originally took Asia Minor that eventually became ruled by the Seleucus (Seleucid) heirs (dynasty). Antiochus the Second ruled about 261-246 B.C. It was a place of early Greek culture and one of the strongholds of the Seleucid empire that aided in the Hellenization of western Asia.

In the first century A.D. the city was under the jurisdiction of the Romans. Like Rome, the city was built on seven hills. The city had great physical beauty and had a strong wall around it for defense. It also had a great temple, banks, a great outdoor market place, a medical school, two Roman theaters, a large stadium, and much more.

Alexander the Great's conquests had quite an effect on the economy of Laodicea. Large quantities of gold and silver from the treasuries of Persia came through Laodicea. New trade routes were opened to China, east Africa, Arabia, and India. As a result, great wealth flowed through Laodicea. Laodicea was a banking center and proud of its wealth. In regards to science, literature, law, banking, medicine, and manufacturing, Laodicea had it all. As an industrial center, clothing was manufactured in the city. It was known for its refinement and manufacture of rich garments of black glossy wool. It shared with Thyatira and Sardis in the dye trade. It had hot mineral springs that folks liked to soak in. A large medical facility was there where the doctors specialized in eye and ear problems. Medicine was made there. Local clay was mixed with spikenard to make a healing salve. This "Phrygian Powder" was used to treat eye and ear diseases and was sold all over the Roman Empire.

Laodicea was destroyed twice by earthquakes in the first century A.D. In 17 A.D. it was destroyed and Rome gave financial aid to help rebuild it. It was destroyed a second time about 62 A.D. and rebuilt by its wealthy citizens without any financial help from Rome.

Laodicea was a religious city. Towards the Phrygian mountains, there was an ancient temple of the Phrygian god, Men Karou. Jupiter or Zeus was worshipped by the folks under Roman rule. The city had in its population seven thousand adult male Hebrews. The Roman road system and Romana Pax (Roman Peace) helped evangelists spread the Word of God (the gospel) throughout the Roman empire. In general, the Romans made travel, whether by land or sea, safer and swifter. The Greek, Epictetus, said at that time, "Caesar has procured us a profound peace. There are no wars, no battles, no massive brigandage, no piracy; we may travel at all hours and sail from East to West."

The church in Laodicea was probably started by Epaphras, a companion of the Apostle Paul
(Colossians 4:12). Eventually, three Christian churches were built there. Christ appeared to use the attributes of this city to illustrate the Laodicean church's true spiritual condition. Christ mentioned their gold that was not the true riches, their cloth of black wool that could not cover their spiritual nakedness, and their eyesalve that would not cure their spiritual blindness. Christ wanted them to embrace the true spiritual riches that included His presence, His salvation, His healing, and so much more. It appears that one problem was their riches influenced many in this church to be self-sufficient, having pride with no apparent need for Christ. This resulted in their lukewarm spiritual condition, as
Revelation 3:18 described. The church had spiritually decayed like a piece of rotten fruit that was not fit to be eaten (vomited forth). The Lord was not happy with them and they received no praise from Him.

The Church in latter times did an apparent spiritual turnabout as one of the early church councils at which the canon of Scripture was determined was held in Laodicea in A.D. 361. The city lies in ruins today as a result of earthquakes. It is located in the nation of Turkey near the modern city of Denizli in case you might like to visit there sometime.

A Unique Way to Look At Each of the Scrolls of Revelation

This Revelation scroll is a unique work by God the Holy Spirit through His Apostle, John. The information and messages in it and the scriptures it points to are for the spiritual benefit, encouragement, guidance, and blessings of those Overcomers who study it. That is why it is a blessing for each Overcomer who studies it (Revelation 1:3).

Each Revelation scroll was written separately and each one was delivered to the church(es)- one at a time. If we consider each complete scroll to be a book then there are twelve independent books placed together to make one complete book (Revelation 1:11). Each scroll must be evaluated and studied separately because each one contains spiritual insight(s) and messages necessary for our spiritual growth and maturity. This is the way Revelation was written and how it is to be studied. Jesus Christ is lifted up in each scroll showing that He is God and is the only way to Heaven. Sometimes, God speaks truth in one scroll and then repeats this same truth in another scroll or more. A good Teacher often repeats a truth so the hearers will understand it. That is the way it is in the bible book of Revelation. If one truth is revealed in more than one scroll, then I try to mention where it is listed in all of the relevant scrolls. And, sometimes, if the same truth is also mentioned in other scrolls of the Bible, other than Revelation, I try to mention it with its reference.

I can imagine that most Overcomers in the first century church waited expectantly and patiently for the next edition (the next Revelation scroll) to be written and come to them. The Apostle John was a senior citizen so it took some time for him to write each one, under inspiration- so the receiving Overcomers had to be patient until the next one arrived- and I am sure a lot of prayer went up for John on his behalf in this endeavor.

This Revelation scroll was not written in the western culture, rather, it was written in the eastern culture in apocalyptic style. As such, the words and names in each verse may have significant spiritual impact and meaning that are intended to draw the reader's attention to other parts of the Word of God. Therefore, one purpose of this scroll is as an index to some scriptures in other parts of God's inspired word. That is how I see it so I share in this work some of those scriptures. That way I let God interpret the bible book of Revelation as He sees fit. All I do is what the early church did with this scroll- to look into the word of God to see what God has for each Overcomer.

All these things happened to them as examples- as object lessons to us- to warn us against doing the same things- they were written down so that we could read about them and learn from them in these last days as the world nears its end
(1 Corinthians 10:11 The Living Bible).

In each scroll of this bible book, I believe God can make relevant His word to each reader in a personal way. Therefore, I try to let God interpret His own word- He does not need me to do that for Him. That is why I try to limit any commentary of my own and why I try to limit my own relevant ideas, nor use summaries or conclusions.

In the writing of this book I have used many resources. Sometimes I referred to the original Greek language. Other times I have used a number of paraphrased editions and translations. And, at other times, I have used my own paraphrase to make things more easy to understand.

More light and truth is always available to earnest seekers of God's word. As mentioned before, God promises a blessing to those who study, believe, and apply all that is contained in the twelve scrolls of Revelation
(Revelation 1:3).

Let Us Apply the Teachings in Revelation to Our Lives

Besides prophecy, and other things, the Bible book of Revelation is an index to other Biblical scriptures. I challenge each of God's Overcomers to study the scriptures in this distinct section diligently. What is God teaching His Overcomers through the study of these scriptures? What all important truth does God want each of His Overcomers to know? Jesus said- ...you make search in the holy scriptures, in the belief that through them you get eternal life- and it is those scriptures that give witness about Me (John 5:39). So my question is this- how can one apply what he has learned here to his or her life? And will one influence others with these truths?
